Lesson 5: Interacting with a Partner

Information

An important part of acting is vulnerability.  Watch the clip below from Les Miserables.  Even though it is a song, Anne Hathaway demonstrates a type of vulnerability that is rare in actors.  She is herself but she is also the character.  Who Anne Hathaway is, brings Fantine alive.  She finds things in herself that connect with Fantine and portrays that by committing fully to demonstrating that connection.

This becomes more difficult when acting with another person because you also must trust the other person to be vulnerable too.

Exercise A
Pair with a partner, and designate one of you to be "A" and the other "B". Memorize and quickly "rehearse" this scene.  It is easy because it is just counting.

A: One
B: Two
A: Three
B: Four
A: Five
B: Six
A: Seven
B: Eight
A: Nine!
B: Ten!

1. Now do the scene believing that your partner may be planning to murder you and that he or she may have a concealed weapon.

2. You were spearated from a beloved sibiling when you were three years old, and you have reason to believe that your partner is that sibiling.
